Benny Watson

Benny Watson is a British artist currently living and working in Birmingham. He began his career painting commissioned large-scale portraits, landscape scenes and eventually abstract expressionist pieces with thick impasto textures before developing his own contemporary art style. He works with a wide variety of materials including oil, acrylic and spray paint.

His recent series of works, SHARDS, is centred around the grieving process he went through following personal loss. The title of his first solo exhibition reflects the impression of feeling broken in sharp pieces when a loved one passes away. The different emotions and stages of grief are embodied in his dynamic, highly-textured paintings into abstract figures and symbols – which he refers to as alter egos.

The Shards series will be on display at Shoreditch Modern from 21st March to 7th April 2024. A free Q&A will be hosted with Watson on 21st March at 6pm.
